a couple weekends ago, my friend danny and i found ourselves passing by what's left of the vershire school after our weekend at the barra homestead. while some of the school buildings have been kept up the "lodge" hasn't. it's amazing what just 16 years will do to a building.
the vershire school closed in 1989, forced by the state to shut down over health violations and other allegations of misconduct. i first visited this place a few years ago with gabriel, who lived here years ago (not in the lodge, but one of the other buildings). i felt such a sense of energy and pioneering spirit in the place that i spent a day researching the school and got the state records about the shut down. some things clearly went wrong here but the place inspired feelings like those i've had while touring ancient ruins and feeling old cultures. maybe it just inspired my wish for peace and love. it's easy to project onto these ruins a wonderful and idyllic history.

Matt, I googled this: A BRIEF HISTORY OF VERSHIRE

yes, i've seen that site. thanks!
walked into that for the first time during winter of 1980. that building was the heart of vershire.
